Storm Damage: Home Owners Woes After the Storm

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

storm above a house The best way to avoid storm damage is to prepare ahead of time.

In the wake of any significant storm, homeowners will inevitably have to deal with some level of damage, whether it’s minor or severe. With that in mind, here are some of the not so obvious home-related woes you might face after dealing with storm damage at your residence.

Controlling leaking pipes

Sometimes, pipes burst and cause water damage. If you know that a pipe is leaking, try to shut off the water supply in that area until it can be repaired. Once you turn off your main water valve, don’t forget to turn off any branch lines running from that area as well. Avoid turning on faucets connected to any of these pipes until repairs are made. Not sure how to do this? Contact a professional plumber if needed!

Maintaining your heating system

If you live in a place that gets cold during winter, it’s important to make sure your heating system is still working. You may need to have some repairs done or get a new furnace if yours is not functioning properly. Experts recommend checking the filter and hoses for clogs and debris, as well as oiling moving parts to help prevent rusting. Be aware of any unusual sounds coming from your furnace and note any changes in temperature inside the house. These are all signs that something may be wrong with your heating system so don’t wait until you notice damage before getting it looked at by a professional!

Waterproofing Your Home

Water damage is a common issue for homeowners. Water can destroy a structure in less than an hour; it’s important to waterproof your home before any flooding occurs. First, seal cracks and crevices where water could seep in. Then, check all door thresholds for any leaks; replace warped or damaged thresholds with new ones. If you live in an area prone to flood waters, have flood protection installed by a professional.

Storm Preventative Measures

The best way to avoid storm damage is to prepare ahead of time. If a big storm is coming your way, be sure to trim any trees close to your home and secure any loose shutters or doors that could fly away during high winds. And remember, you should always have an emergency kit prepared for any natural disaster!

5 Tips to Protect Your Home from Flooding

5/26/2022 (Permalink)

bench in flood Know your flood risk

It’s not uncommon to hear about floods in other parts of the country, but flooding can happen to you. Whether it happens from an earthquake or heavy rains, staying prepared can help you and your home survive unscathed if flooding does occur. To keep your home safe from flooding, follow these five tips for protecting your home from flooding.

1) Know your flood risk
If you’re at risk of flooding, don’t panic. It is possible to minimize your home’s vulnerability with careful preparation and mitigation measures. These include installing sump pumps, taking other steps, and having a restoration plan if floodwaters rise too high or take hold for too long. Just last year, residents in Modesto and Manteca were forced to evacuate their homes due to rising floodwaters caused by heavy rains that lasted several days. Although no one was hurt, many people lost everything they owned.

2) Prepare for flooding
Flood mitigation techniques may seem like a waste of time and money. Still, suppose you’re planning on living in an area that experiences flooding, like Modesto or Manteca. In that case, it’s worth taking preventative measures. There are many ways you can protect your home—from reinforcing basement walls and flood vents to using flood-proof switches for lighting.

3) Store Important Documents in Waterproof Bags
When at home, make sure important documents are stored in waterproof bags. If a flood does occur, you’ll want to be able to reach these records as quickly as possible. The CDC estimates that some $28 billion worth of damage is caused by flooding each year, so keeping your important documents safe is essential.

4) Keep an Emergency Kit Ready
In case of flooding, it’s essential to keep an emergency kit ready with crucial documents and supplies (e.g., nonperishable food, first aid kit, bottled water, blankets, flashlights). You can buy these items or put them together your own. Keep them in a bag or box and make sure they’re easy to access if you need them. The Red Cross recommends keeping one in your car at all times.

5) Prepare For Rain Storms
When it rains, it pours. And if a rainy day happens when you’re not prepared, you can quickly find yourself knee-deep in trouble. This doesn’t mean that a couple of rain barrels and an umbrella will keep your home dry (that’s what we’re here for). But there are several vital things you can do to mitigate flood damage as much as possible before it occurs. Follow the steps above, and you will have a good start. By all means, read through our blog for more handy tips.

Rain on a window pane Need help protecting your home from storm damage or do you need storm damage restoration services?

Prevention is better and cheaper than cure. Just a little care and maintenance can protect your home from potential storms, ice, and snow damage.

Consider the following tips to help you protect your home from storm damage.

Maintain Your Roof

You can maintain your roof by:

  • Clearing the gutters to prevent ice from accumulating under the shingles.
  • Trimming outgrown trees that extend to the rooftop to stop its branches from falling on the roof house.
  • Replacing or repairing damaged, worn-out or missing roof flashing or sliding to keep water and ice from entering your home.
  • Checking chimney, if it's leaning or the mortar is aged get it repaired.

Prevent Ice Dams on The Roof

  • Stop the freezing cycle or slow it by keeping the attic cool and ventilated.
  • Remove standing water before an ice dam can form. If you can't do it yourself, contact a professional.
  • Avoid chipping ice dams off the rooftop to prevent damaging it. Hire a professional to help instead.
  • Have your roof deck sealed with a moisture barrier.

Prevent Water Damage

Water damage on the property can be prevented by:

  • Insulating exposed worn-out or exposed pipes with heat tape.
  • Insulating and ventilating the attic floor to prevent warm air from melting frozen water.
  • Open the kitchen cabinets to allow warm air to circulate freely around pipes.
  • Sealing cracked walls and holes to avoid leakage water or melted ice from weakening the walls.
  • Checking all the connecting piping in the house for leakages or rusty pipes and getting them fixed.
  • Shutting off the water centrally when leaving the house for an extended period.
  • Hiring a professional to chain your water system and have it drained.
  • Lowering the temperature of your heat system.

How to Check Your Manteca or Modesto Home for Storm Damage

11/28/2021 (Permalink)

damaged roof SERVPRO of Manteca and Modesto’s highly-trained professionals can assist you in completing storm damage repairs.

The storm has passed, and the wind has calmed down. The skies begin to clear outside, and your Manteca or Modesto property appears to be unharmed. It is essential to do a quick check around the home to ensure there is no storm damage! What about the ceiling? The windows? What about the rain gutters and siding? What about your home, in general? How do you know your home is undamaged after a storm?

It is impossible to predict how much damage a storm may cause. Even if your home appears to have weathered the storm, a trip around your property may expose a hazard you would not have noticed otherwise.

Roofing might break, paint can flake, and concrete can wear away. The sooner you examine the damages, the better. And even if you feel your home survived the storm with minor damage, it's always a good idea to do the following:

1. Check the roof for visible wreckage and check for missing or broken tiles.

Even if the affected site is minimal, a dented or damaged roof can pose significant issues. Water may have leaked into the interior of the home during the storm, and if ignored, it will result in more severe water damage issues. Are there any missing shingles? And even if a shingle is still on the roof but has slipped, it might still cause water damage.

2. Try to assess the water stains on the interior and exterior walls.

Is there any evident moisture on your external walls or within your home? Water damage can result when heavy rain pours during a storm and gets into minor gaps in the walls.

After a storm, it can take a few days for external walls to dry up, so keep an eye on them for a few days. Keeping watch ensures you won't miss any moist spots that become prominent after the storm has passed and the house has dried out.

3. Exterior walls should be checked for holes and dents.

A spider-web pattern of cracks spreading out from a single site is a common indication of storm or hurricane damage. It implies that an impact on the outer wall was substantial enough to damage the interior foam insulation.

Chipped paint or plaster and small holes in the cement surface are damage symptoms and should be taken seriously.

4. Check for water pools in the basement and other crawl spaces.

If at all possible, look underneath your house in the crawl areas. Look for water pools, as this could indicate a more severe drainage issue.

It is imperative to get rid of any water pools or flooding underneath your home. To prevent it from happening again, use a sump pump to remove the water. Mold formation, wood decay, and structural damage can arise from water accumulating in basements, tight spaces, cracks, and crevices.

5. Carefully inspect each window, fascias, and gutters.

Although the storm may not have damaged your windows, always examine them. Look for signs of water inside your windows, as this could indicate a minor leak that could turn into a major one.

It is also equally important to examine the surface of your soffits and fascias when you have safe access. Any dents, cracks, or paint chips caused by hail could indicate a more significant problem beneath the surface.

Because hail and windstorms are usually directional, only one side may be damaged, while the other sides seem to be unaffected. It is also essential to check at different times of the day to see whether the difference in lighting allows you to see damage more clearly.

You can make a lot of minor repairs yourself after a storm. In addition to a comprehensive examination, you would like to ensure that your home is ready for any future storms.

SERVPRO of Manteca and Modesto’s highly-trained professionals can assist you in completing storm damage repairs as well as preparing your property for future storms or harsh weather. We want you to be able to return to your home as soon as possible. Whether you are dealing with minor storm damage or something more serious, our team has the skills and equipment to clean, restore your house and get your life back to normal after a storm.

water on the street from the rain SERVPRO of Modesto / Manteca has highly qualified personnel that will restore your property to its pre-storm condition using specialized equipment.

Many countries around the world have experienced violent storms that have destroyed homes, devastated communities, and had long-term effects on their lives and their properties. Sadly, damaging storms are becoming more common, and it's critical to know what to do if your home has been damaged by one.

Storm Types and Expected Damages

Thunderstorms

All thunderstorms are dangerous and can cause a variety of problems. Thunderstorms can inflict damage owing to high winds, flash flooding from rain, and lightning strikes. As the weather worsens, it's critical to keep a close eye on it and take necessary safety precautions, as storms can cause damage to properties and injury or death, both indirectly and directly.

Hailstorms

Hailstorms are unavoidable, and no matter the speed and size, they can cause significant damage to homes. Hail damage is one of the most common causes of homeowner claims each year.

Hail can dent aluminum siding, shingles, and gutters, as well as crack vinyl siding, asphalt roofs, and wood shakes.

Lightning

One of the most dangerous weather conditions is lightning. Lightning may quickly start a fire in a home, apartment, or commercial building by burning wood, insulation, roofing, or siding. Electrical fires can also result from a rapid and intense surge of electricity, creating a dangerous condition for anybody inside or near the home.

Floods

The most prevalent natural calamity is flooding. It might develop slowly or rapidly, and it can strike without warning. Floods cause power outages, traffic disruptions, building damage, and landslides.

When your home and business are damaged by a storm, it might feel as if your life has been turned completely upside down. You may be feeling overwhelmed by the storm's devastation, and deciding what to do first might be difficult.

AFTER A FLOOD, YOU SHOULD:

How To Be Prepared Before Flooding Strikes in Manteca and Modesto

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded Neighborhood Should you be struck by a flooding event, contact SERVPRO of Manteca and Modesto at (209) 823-8877!

You don't need to live near a stream or water body before you prepare for a flood. A flood can generate long after rainfall or can happen due to inadequate drainage systems, failed levees, and dams. In Manteca and Modesto we see our fair share of flooding in the home. These floods are usually due to failed levees or even busted pipes.

Below are a few things you should consider when preparing for a flood to help save lives and on property damage

Have a disaster supply kit for emergency use during a flood.

The kit should include the following items:

  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

· Battery-powered radio. This is important to get useful information about the flood if it is not isolated to just your home.

  • Extra batteries
  • Food and drinking water sufficient for every member of your family for at least three days. Keep in an enclosed box or containers to get contaminated or destroyed by the flood.
  • Cash
  • Mask
  • Wrench, spanners, or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Local maps
  • Waterproof cell phones or satellite phones for emergency use.

A flood can catch you at the home, office, or on the road (in your car). It is ideal for preparing multiple supply kits for home, office, and car.

Keep important documents locked in a waterproof safe. Better to even save them electronically and have them backed up in the cloud.

It is imperative to make a family communication plan for emergencies, be it fire or flood. All family members should agree on a meeting place during an emergency. Every member of the family should practice emergency procedures and escape routes at least twice a year. Set emergency contacts that everyone (especially the kids) should be familiar with during emergencies. Identify someone outside your community where members of your family can contact or go to when separated.

Ensure your home and priorities. Ensure your home insurance policy does cover flooding that originates inside or outside your home. Choose the best insurance coverage for your home.

Ensure your insurance policy papers are safe in a waterproof box and digital to help you process your insurance after the flood.

Should you be struck by a flooding event, contact SERVPRO of Manteca and Modesto at (209) 823-8877!

Fall Maintenance for Your Manteca and Modesto Home

Fall Maintenance for Your Manteca and Modesto Home

The fall season is synonymous with rains, storms, and likely floods. To come out on top, preparation is everything. Good preparation can minimize the impact of a disaster. Pay attention to the guidelines below so as not to be caught with damage to your homes.

  • Take inventory of your home and properties. Take time to list out your valuables. Take pictures and back up within a cloud drive/storage. This is important for insurance purposes in the event of a disaster. This is also an excellent time to reevaluate your insurance to cover likely incidents peculiar to this season.
  • Carry out home maintenance. Inspect roof shingles for repairs or replacement before the storm season arrives. Clear out gutters, downspouts, and drainage systems to ensure water drains off quickly. Inspect doors and windows, ensuring it is securely sealed when firmly shut. Keep windows clean; the same goes for curtains and shades. Last but not least, trim any trees and landscape around your environment. It lowers the possibility of having something break off.
  • All housing systems should be thoroughly inspected. Heating and ventilation must be serviced. Clean out furnace filters, reprogram your thermostat, and check water heaters. Examine the sewage system. An overflow or failed sewage is a whole class of disaster on its own. Ensure electrical backups are intact, such as generators. Storms come with the risk of lightning. When the appropriate authorities warn, turn off all electrical appliances and switch over to battery-powered sources. Ensure all backups are in functioning order.
  • Review disaster plans, evacuation plans, and evacuation routes thoroughly. Ensure everyone knows what steps to take in an emergency. Where to go, how to get there, which numbers to call, and the most important things to take along. Keep emergency kits prepped and stocked. Aside from a portable emergency kit, store the home with non-perishable food and water supplies as well.
  • Health Supplies: Given the pandemic, it is of utmost importance to have health supplies with you. Particular prescribed medication, sanitizers, nose masks, and hand gloves are the staples. Please take note of the National Center for Disease Control recommendation on the use of these items, especially with regards to the elderly, kids, and those with a medical condition.

After reviewing the guidelines above, reach out to experts to help evaluate your plans, preparation, and drill your family or staff. This ensures no stone is left unturned or there are gaping loopholes in your plans. Such experts should be intimately familiar with the locality and its peculiarities.

Flood damage can be severe if not quickly attended to which is why you must know what to do when faced with this challenge. We prioritize safety first during a flood, however, if the flood is severe, don’t hesitate to call a professional restoration service company to help with the restoration process.

Here are some basic steps to take if your house is flooded:

  • Remember, safety first! Ensure everyone in the home is safe and outside of the flood area as soon as possible. It is best to find a safe dry spot far from the house before you begin to think of anything else. If the flood is naturally caused, call the emergency unit for immediate evacuation.
  • Once everyone is safe, try to find the source of the flooding if it is not naturally caused. Turning off the water from the source will help to stop the spread.
  • Turn off the electricity, but avoid coming in contact with the water if it has contacted any socket to avoid getting electrocuted. Better still, if you cannot reach the fuse box without stepping in water, call an electrician.
  • Take pictures and videos of affected areas for insurance documentation.

For the clean-up process,

  • Wear appropriate clothing before stepping foot or touching the water to avoid getting in contact with contaminated water or hazardous material. Wear waders or waterproof boots.
  • Remove water from the building using vacuum or a pump. Open Windows and doors to let fresh air in and circulate.
  • Salvage items that are not seriously damaged. Throw away contaminated food.
  • Dry out spaces out with fans and dehumidifiers. Disinfect anything that was touched by the water.

Wet spaces are a breeding ground for mold, it's very important to dry them to prevent mold spores from growing. Once a mold colony gets established it leaves a not easy to remove stain on your property. Keep the affected areas as dry as possible, Treat these areas with a strong cleaner, such as a bleach solution.

Get the help of a professional cleaning and restoration service provider to restore your home to a tastefully finished one. Last spring CBS 10 News wrote an article, ‘Stanislaus County: What every person should know about flood risk’, and the article gave warning that everyone should educate themselves about flood risk despite the amount of rain and snowmelt needed to create a large flood impact. Floods have occurred in the recent past because of weather in the Manteca and Modesto areas, and household mishaps happen on top of bad weather concerns. Flood risk is a big priority in the Manteca and Modesto area for these reasons.

What rivers pose a flood risk in Stanislaus County:

At risk in the Modesto area is the downtown area and the low-lying trailer parks along the Tuolumne River. Dry Creek can be an issue because of unregulated flows. This stream is observed carefully. Dry Creek and the Don Pedro River releases make up most of the flow below 9th street in Modesto and pose a risk in this location.

The San Joaquin River poses more issues because it is harder to predict flood risk as it has multiple rivers flowing into it. To name one, the Merced River causes some concern when flows are at or above flood stage. The major concern is the lower-lying trailer parks western of Stanislaus County.

Extensive flooding hit the area back in 1997 as Don Pedro Dam filled up and had uncontrolled releases. These releases mixed with Dry creek’s uncontrolled flows overwhelmed the levees and massive flooding occurred. Flooding even protruded out to Modesto’s urban areas.

As horrible as the floods were in 1997, the last set of flood damages reported occurred just a few years ago in 2017. Don Pedro River’s spillways opened for the first time in 20 years. Mostly affected were the lower residential regions, like the trailer parks in the area.

 Be Prepared for Flooding:

  • Register your home, work, and children’s school addresses for alerts with StanAware
  • Have a safety kit ready: water, batteries, flashlights, fuel, important documents, etc
  • Have an evacuation route planned

A flood being likely or not, it is important to stay alert regarding flood risk in the area and to understand flooding is not only caused by heavy rains. Household accidents can cause flooding as well. Be alert and be safe.

Protecting your Home from Flooding

After a natural disaster, such as a flood or storm, it is imperative to address any water damages that occur in the home. This must be done right away. Without the proper water damage restoration services set in place, restoring your home and bringing it back to its pre-damaged condition can be difficult. Mold can set in and grow, creating horrible odors and posing major health concerns. Taking the correct steps and working with the correct restoration service company can alleviate a lot of hassle and save you money in the long run.

As a homeowner in the Manteca and Modesto area being aware of flood danger zones, knowing what to do in a flood, and understanding what steps to take after a flood is the best preparation one could do. There are options to consider in preparation for flooding due to a storm.

Here are a few tips for home flood preparation:

  1. Close foundation cracks with mortar, masonry caulk, or hydraulic cement. Hydraulic cement is inexpensive and expands and fills gaps.
  2. Invest in battery-powered sump pumps. Sump pumps allow you to pump water out of your home should your home experience flooding.
  3. Install sewer or septic link check valves. these allow waste to flow only one way so that sewage can’t back up into the standing water in your home.
  4. Move expensive belongings to a safe location. If you have expensive pieces of furniture or artwork get them to the second floor or the attic if you have this as an option.
  5. Ensure you have proper insurance. Many homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover cleanup or repair of flood damage.

There are many options you can consider when protecting your home and your family from flood damage, some are easier and less expensive than others. Some options require professional flood damage restoration services from an experienced and specially trained company such as SERVPRO of Manteca and Modesto. Our technicians have professional-grade equipment that can rid your home of all the standing water and dry your home back out.

8 Tips to Prepare for a Heavy Rain or Windstorm

11/6/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy rain hitting the roof of a home and the home’s rain gutters. Heavy Rain

Be as ready as you can be for coming storms if you live where heavy rains or winds are predicted. Heavy rains lead to water leaks through the roof and ceilings, soaking walls and furniture while flooding floors. How can you best prepare and protect your home and belongings?

8 Tips to prepare for a storm

  1. Gutters can get clogged with leaves and other debris. Clean out gutters and waterspouts before rain season and after each rain. Leaves and debris are often pushed into gutters as they wash down from the roof after it rains. Look for loose gutters and replace those.
  2. After a storm, take a quick look to see if any large debris, like tree branches, has fallen on your roof. If you find anything large that needs removal, hire a professional to get rid of it. If there is no sign of debris, from ground level, check your roof for broken, loose, or cracked shingles or tiles and for any bubbling or blistering in shingles or tiles. Use binoculars if need be. If you spot any damage hire a professional for repair.
  3. Inspect the siding of your home. Check for cracks or holes and seal in any leaks that you come across.
  4. Weather-strip your home. Windows and doors let in cool air if weather-stripping needs to be replaced. Minimize heat loss and ensure that your weather-stripping is not damaged. Replace if needed.
  5. Consider a backup generator. If there is a power outage, an emergency generator can keep a few lights and appliances on for a few hours up to 24 hours.
  6. Cover outdoor furniture, barbecues, and any outdoor equipment with heavy tarps. Secure tarps so that heavy winds do not expose or damage your belongings.
  7. Make sure your trees are trimmed. Trees weaken with droughts, and when the rain comes, weak trees can snap or uproot. The cities of Manteca and Modesto are susceptible to this more so than other cities as droughts are imminent during summer months and heavy rains come winter months.
  8. Make sure you have a disaster supply kit. Important documents should be stored in the cloud. Ensure you have home insurance in case your home is flooded even if you are not located in a high-risk area. Anything could happen, a pipe may burst, heavy rain can cave in a roof, etc.  Make sure you are covered.

Storm season is fast approaching and we all must be prepared. It was not that long ago, just in 2016, that South Manteca was in jeopardy of widespread evacuations due to the San Joaquin River threatening to break the banks of the local region. Before a storm strikes prepare yourself at home, at the job site, and even in your vehicle.

  • Heating Fuel
  • Fire extinguisher

  • First-aid kit
  • Knife
  • Dry clothes
  • Shovel
  • Tool kit

Most Common Types of Storm Damage

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms cause a lot of harm and the amount of destruction caused by lightening can be unpredictable. Some storms come and go with little effect, and others cause minor damage to the home. Worst-case scenario, storms can cause families to uproot from their homes, causing them to need temporary housing. For a commercial facility, flooding or fire damage from a storm can cause business closure for a few hours, up to weeks or more.

Large amounts of rain with high winds and lightning can be a huge threat to our community and our safety.

Flood Damage

Some areas of Modesto and Manteca are more prone to flood damage than others. Just multiple inches of rain can cause major issues. In areas you do not expect flooding, a few inches of rain can easily clog a drainpipe and cause disaster. Flood damage is usually found in homes with basements or in residential and business communities in lower levels of the valley.

Wind Damage

Wind causes a lot of destruction. Roof damage is the number one complaint after a windstorm. Shingles become loose over time and without proper roofing materials, your homes and businesses become unprotected. Fencing can fall over, and even worse, a tree can fall atop your home or vehicle causing major damages.

Fire Damage

Storms produce dangerous amounts of lightning, causing structural fires. Fires happen quite often especially in places that have been through a long dry spell. Homes and businesses near fields, trees, and vegetation are at higher risk for fire. Modesto and Manteca pose for major concerns because of droughts. Due to droughts, water policy is often stricter than other cities causing Modesto and Manteca to be extra cautious come drier seasons.

What you can do before we arrive after a flood

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

When storm damage hits, there is often little a homeowner can do to prevent floodwaters from entering the home. These carry immense power and can seep in through even the smallest cracks. However, when it comes to preventing damage to your home and reducing costs during the restoration process, there are a few steps you can take before a SERVPRO crew arrives. If possible, carry out these tasks before we arrive, but always be mindful of your safety and health.

Put a Barrier Between Furniture and the Floor

One of the easiest ways to mitigate harm to your furniture during storm damage in Manteca is to place a small barrier between your furniture and the floor. Prop up couches, chairs, desks, tables, and anything else you can on top of wooden blocks, bricks, or some other stable object. This effort will help to keep the furniture from coming into any more direct contact with flood water.

Lay Things Out to Dry

If floodwaters have already receded from an area, you can take fabrics and objects there and place them out to dry. This placement is essential for couches and furniture with cushions/pillows because the moisture will instead become trapped inside, causing severe and often irreversible damage. Do not, however, attempt to dry items with a hair dryer or other machine. Instead, try to find a sunny or warm area to place them.

Leave Electricity Alone

Anything electrical in your home presents a major hazard following a flood, so even if you feel that turning something on is necessary, wait until a SERVPRO representative arrives to consult them. If a room is dark and you wish to enter, there may be water damage to the lights or wiring and these may present a hazard. Similarly, avoid using outlets or anything plugged in.

Manteca: What to do if Your House is Flooded

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Protection

It’s likely that the water affecting your home has been contaminated or is sewer water. Also, depending on how soon you get started, mold can be beginning to grow! Protective wear such as masks, gloves, & work boots should be worn.

Remove Damaged Belongings From Your Home

Gather all damaged items and move them out to the curb. This task can be pretty nasty and time consuming, however if you feel you can get some of this done yourself, you will save some money.

Water Removal

In the event that the amount of water is minimal, you can grab a shop vacuum from your local store and extract as much water as you can yourself. If the amount of water in a home is too much to remove on your own SERVPRO is here to help.

Demo

Depending on the year of your property was built, you may need to test for asbestos and lead before you begin demo. If your house is asbestos and lead free then you can personally remove affected flooring and drywall. Carpet and padding can be lifted and taken out of your home. Affected baseboard and/or drywall can be cut out and trashed. Typically, with water loss, tile floors should be removed since its likely that water has gotten under tiles.

Clean & Disinfect

Pine Sol or Lysol mixed with equal part water will work fine. You may want to go over everything twice to be sure all remaining germs are gone from your home. It’s also common to use bleach for disinfecting, many professionals use green products that are very effective and safe to use as well. You should read the labels and wear gloves even if you are using green products.

Get the Air Moving

It only takes 48–72 hours for bacterial and mold growth to begin to spread. If a large amount of microbial growth develops, it can increase remediation costs by thousands of dollars. It’s very important that the drying process start ASAP. Although box fans and dehumidifier are no competition for professional equipment, they can definitely help. Place several fans and a dehumidifier throughout the affected area. You may still need professional such as SERVPRO of Manteca to completely dry out the affected areas but the less time you need professional equipment, the more money you keep in your pocket.

Spring Clean

Basements, closets and attics often become a place for those things that don’t get used regularly. Take time at least once a year to go through these areas and get the old clothing and random clutter to the recycling bin. Should the time come, you’ll be glad that mess is not an issue.

Put Items Up High

Boxes and items on the floor can create one big problem when dealing water damage. It’s a great idea to invest metal or plastic shelving units. Wood is easily cleaned but may not be salvageable.

Storing In Bins

Using plastic or rubber bins as a means of storage is a smart idea. They provide an inexpensive and organized option for belongings you want to save. Be sure to secure lids properly.

The best advice I can give you is to use a reputable restoration company such as SERVPRO. Especially if you simply don’t have time to get the work done yourself.  Call us at (209)823-8877

Manteca:How to protect your home from flood damage

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

It is essential to address the situation as soon as possible after your home has sustained water damage following a natural disaster such as a flood or storm. Without the proper water damage restoration services to restore your home and bring it back to its pre-damaged condition, mold can begin to grow and create unpleasant odors, plus it can be detrimental to your health. Every water damage and removal project is unique, but the universal idea is to do a complete and thorough drying before any necessary rebuilding can be done.

You need to be aware as a homeowner how to protect your Manteca home from flood damage. Depending upon the risks of floods in your area, there are many options you can consider, some which are easy to implement and not costly, while others could require professional flood damage restoration services from an experienced and specially trained company such as SERVPRO. Our technicians have professional grade equipment which can rid your home of all the standing water, plus dry your home back out.

Installing drainage systems, sealing low windows, building flood walls and levees or elevating buildings are all things you might consider, depending on your budget. Remember that the height of the electric panel inside your home is regulated by a code and must be a minimum of a foot above the flood elevation. If it is not, call a licensed flood damage contractor so that all your outlets and wiring can be elevated to the correct height.

A floating floor drain plug can help a flood damaged home when the drain pipe backs up. In the case of flood waters going into your sewage system and cause a sewage backup in your home, you need to install a backflow valve.

You should also have an extra insurance policy for flood damage, as homeowners’ policies do not cover the cleanup or repair of flood damage. When an emergency arises, SERVPRO can assist you in talking to your insurance company so you can worry about more pressing things, like your family.

Manteca: Dangerous Things to Look for in Flood Damage

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Flood damage is both dangerous and unpredictable, and together, these qualities can create high-risk scenarios in your home even after the disaster has run its course. Homes are susceptible to gas leaks, fires, structural collapse, and other additional disasters even when damage is relatively light, as floodwaters may combine with other prior issues to create much more dangerous situations. One must be alert at all times when entering or inspecting a flood damaged area, so be sure to watch for these early warning signs of serious danger.

Doors that Catch on the Ceiling

One of the most dangerous and difficult to detect dangers in Highland Park flood damage cases is structural instability. It can be difficult to spot where a ceiling or wall is ready to buckle, and too often, it is only after the area has collapsed that anyone realizes the problem. One of the most critical signs of imminent structural collapse may be when doors get stuck on the tops of their frames. As weight causes the frame to sag slightly, the door will not be able to swing as usual. If a door scrapes the top of its frame, don't try to force itself open and be sure to alert a SERVPRO technician.

Unusual Odors

If you have encountered an area with an especially strong smell emanating from within, be sure to tell a SERVPRO technician right away and describe the odor. Smells are the easiest way to identify a potentially deadly gas leak, or perhaps a long-festering spot of mold growth. These odors will usually be foul, but most importantly, they stand out from others. A flooded home does not often smell good in the first place, so what you are mostly looking for is a sudden change in smell.

Cut Cords, Pipes, or Gas Lines

Any sort of line or pipe may be susceptible to oxidation or physical harm during a flood, and these can create serious hazards in your home. If you spot slashed cables, pipes, or anything that might contain a hazardous substance, exercise extreme caution and alert any nearby technicians.
